Senegal is a mosaic of tribes, each of which contributes to the sense and spirit that make up this remarkable country.

Traditions that go back for generations ensure that the practices of each tribe remain theirs alone. A fine example of this is the witch doctors’ masks and body coverings which, although all are made of natural materials, bark, grass, and leaves, differ widely in appearance from one tribe to another.

Even languages and beliefs are distinct to each tribe. This is most striking among those that live in the small villages in the southeastern part of the country where tiny clans are ruled by formidable witch doctors, where rites and customs continually reinforce the belief in magic and the supernatural world.

During my travels there I was privileged to see and photograph many of their dances, initiations, masks, drums, and witch doctors.
