Bhutan is a tiny kingdom, a country of Buddhists and dzongs (fortresses), yaks and sheep. Until very recently, foreigners were not permitted to enter the country and, even now, only a limited number of small, organized groups may be granted temporary visas. I was especially fortunate in being permitted to travel about the country as a single individual, accompanied only by my guide.
The king, who is absolute ruler, has made it his mission to maintain his country’s cultural identity. An example of this is that in the construction of buildings, including private homes, traditional techniques must be followed - thus, among other things, no nails may be used.
The people are ruled by a code of ethics based on Buddhist teachings which emphasize respect for all forms of life and the necessity to subjugate evil. Even the symbols of Bhutanese Buddhism are so important that they dominate the national flag.
